William Smith

Hey, if anyone is heading to England anytime, let me know.  I have some stories my mom gave me about my Great Great Grandfather William Smith.  He was born in a place called Macclesfield in Cheshire County.  I organized a little information about his life below.

Part 1-Macclesfield

Born in Macclesfield, Cheshire County, England in 1824, William Smith was the third in the generation of William Smith's, his own father being William Smith Jr. and his grandfather, William Smith Sr. His great grandfather was named John Smith. Generations of the Smith family appear to have lived in Cheshire County, England since at least John's birth around 1736 from records we have. We haven't been able to take the records back any further on this Smith line.
Macclesfield is located in Northwest England. Macclesfield was also known as “silk town”. Silk weaving had been done since 1750 in Macclesfield, and it is said that most of the silk-covered buttons in Britain and over much of the civilized world in the late 18th century were made in Macclesfield.
If you were to visit Macclesfield today, the closest airport to land in would be at Manchester, which is about 18 miles north of Macclesfield. Manchester itself would be an important area later in William's life, as he met his 2nd wife, my great great grandmother, Mary Hibbert there. Another area that would prove important was Liverpool, west 43 miles, where the Smith family left England for America. So, areas of significance for Smith ancestral information that you could visit if you were over in England would be Macclefield itself and Manchester and Liverpool.
